Jetstar launches new international flights from Cairns and Melbourne

  • Jetstar becomes the first low fares airline to fly Cairns-Bali nonstop with three service a week from 31 March 2015*
  • First low fares carrier to fly Melbourne-Wellington with four services a week from 30 March 2015*
  • Gold Coast to Perth flights reinstated from 29 March 2015*

Jetstar has today announced it will launch three new routes from Cairns and Melbourne from 29 March 2015*.

The new flights from Cairns to Bali, Melbourne to Wellington as well as the reinstatement of the Gold Coast to Perth route will deliver up to 4,500 extra seats a week across Jetstar’s Asia Pacific network.

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO David Hall said the low fares airline was particularly pleased to offer more international services to travellers along the eastern seaboard.

“We’re always looking to open up new travel opportunities for our customers and I’m delighted that we’re the first low fares carrier to offer direct flights from Cairns to Bali,” Mr Hall said.

“Bali is one of Australia’s favourite overseas holiday destinations and I’m sure our direct low fares flights will appeal to families and groups of friends looking for a relaxing beach getaway.”

Mr Hall said Victorian and New Zealand travellers also stood to benefit from new flights in 2015.

“I’m really pleased that we’re bringing low fares to the Melbourne-Wellington route for the first time,” Mr Hall said.

“Both cities have world-class café and dining scenes and a host of major sporting and cultural events throughout the year. I have no doubt our flights will help stimulate growth for both tourism markets as we entice new travellers to take up the opportunity of a short break across the Tasman.”

Mr Hall added the airline was delivering the increased capacity without the addition of any new aircraft to the fleet.

“We’ve done a lot of work revamping our schedule to ensure we can deliver more seats with our existing aircraft,” Mr Hall said.

“We always need to look for opportunities to increase the utilisation of our aircraft so that we can keep costs down across the network and continue offering the lowest fares to our customers.”

Jetstar has also moved to reinstate its Gold Coast-Perth service after suspending the route in 2013.

Market conditions have improved during the past year and the low fares airline will operate up to six overnight services a week between the two destinations from 29 March 2015.

Today’s announcements closely follow the introduction of flights from Brisbane to Honolulu (16 December) as well as the Gold Coast to Wellington (12 December) and Queenstown (13 December).

“The Sunshine State has been a pivotal part of our network since day one and I’m thrilled that Queensland has been such a big winner with these recent announcements,” Mr Hall said.

From April 2015, Jetstar will offer up to 21,600 international seats a week in and out of Queensland – an increase of more than 30 percent on the previous year.

The introduction of the Melbourne-Wellington services will see Jetstar offer up to 26,800 international seats a week to and from Melbourne.
